Visa and entry guide

A short guide to what to check before you book. Entry rules depend on your passport and change often, so always confirm on the official pages. We help with applications, but embassies decide visas.

Draft Draft: the hints below come from secondary sources and have not been confirmed on official pages. Never book based on this page alone.

Not confirmed. Check whether Armenian passports are on Japan's visa-exemption list, or whether you need a visa or the eVisa.

ChinaVisa-free (hint, verify)

Secondary sources list Armenia among countries with a mutual visa exemption with China, with stays of up to 90 days in a 180-day period mentioned.

Sources conflict: some list a visa-free stay, others a visa requirement. Check the Hong Kong Immigration Department.

Russia

JapanVisa likely needed (hint, verify)

Secondary sources say Russian citizens need a visa for Japan.

ChinaVisa-free (hint, verify)

Russia appears on China's unilateral 30-day visa-free list. Sources disagree on the end date (December 2026 or December 2027).

How to check for your passport

Read the exact number of days, the purpose of stay and the conditions.

Check your embassy's page for how to apply and how long it takes.

  4. 4

Send us your plan and we will help you line up the documents.

Japan

Short stays (tourism, university visits): up to 90 days for passports on Japan's visa-exemption list. Other passports apply for a short-term visa at the Japanese embassy, or use the eVisa where it is available.

If you plan to study

Study longer than 90 days needs the status of residence 'Student'. The university applies for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) in Japan; you then apply for the visa at the embassy with it.

  1. Choose the university and programme
  2. The university applies for your COE (allow several weeks)
  3. Apply for the visa at the Japanese embassy with the COE
  4. Arrive and register your address

China

Tourism and short visits: check the visa-free policy for your passport. Days and conditions change, and some lists are renewed year by year.

If you plan to study

Study over 180 days needs an X1 visa, with the Admission Notice and the JW201 or JW202 form from the university. Shorter study uses an X2 visa. After arrival you convert it into a residence permit.

  1. Receive the Admission Notice and JW201/JW202 form
  2. Apply for the X1 or X2 visa at the Chinese embassy or visa centre
  3. Arrive within the date on the visa
  4. Apply for the residence permit within 30 days of arrival (the university helps)

Official pages

Hong Kong

Visit rules are separate from mainland China: Hong Kong has its own list of visa-free countries and permitted stays.

If you plan to study

Non-local students normally get a student entry permit through the university after receiving an offer.

  1. Receive an offer from the university
  2. The university submits the student entry application
  3. Collect the approval notice and travel
  4. Register at the university
